Rotator cuff injuries are often disregarded as a serious problem. People consider them as just one of those shoulder pains they have most of the time. But rotator cuff injuries can lead to loose of arm movements. Our rotator cuff comprises four major muscles, and an injury to one of these muscles causes rotator cuff injuries which can range from an inflammation to a partial or complete tear of the muscles which needs surgery to repair it.

People most at risk of having rotator cuff injuries are those who are over 40 years old wherein rotator cuff injuries are most common. Athletes like baseball pitchers, tennis players, construction workers, painters who often do repetitive and overhead movements are at high risk of having these injuries. Those who have weak shoulder muscles and poor posture are also at risk. Usually the common causes of these injuries are falling, lifting, pulling and overhead movements done repetitively.

If you are at risk of having rotator cuff injuries, you can do shoulder exercises daily to strengthen your shoulder muscles. You can consult a doctor or a physical therapist in starting with these exercises or you can have an exercise routine especially prepared for your needs.

If your injury is just minor, it can easily repair on its own. You must rest your shoulders if you feel pain, limit activities especially those overhead and repetitive movements until you feel better. Also, you can apply cold application over the shoulders for two-three days then apply warm application for the next two- three days. Take anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers if necessary. Keep on moving those shoulder muscles as well, inactivity may cause stiffness of the shoulder joints. If the injury is major enough, then you should consult your doctor about it. So, the doctor can check if surgery is needed to cure the injury.

Rotator cuff injuries should not be ignored, don’t wait for the time that you can no longer move your shoulders. Avoid activities and things that will put you at risk of this type of injury. Don’t disregard the symptoms; especially shoulder pain that you are feeling. Prevent it as much as possible, to prevent further damage to the shoulder muscles.
